Stick-Lets - Because Mother Nature Misses Us

It was early 2014 and one of our Flying Fox Studios educators discovered a product called Stick-lets. How excited we were to discover a wonderful, outdoor, resource that is designed to connect kids with nature. Made of 100% silicone, Stick-lets come in various sizes with 2, 3 or 4 holes that allow you to bind sticks, dowel or rods together. The open ended construction possibilities are endless.

Our own kids use ours to make massive cubby houses and complicated mazes with sticks and sometimes sheets or tarps. They are fantastic for a day, weekend or school holiday project.

Over the years Stick-lets has continued to be a popular addition to our Steam Kids universe, encouraging kids to get outside, away from screens and reconnect with the great outdoors.

We had a ball with a mini set at the World Science Festival in Brisbane in both 2017 and 2018, it's always amazing to us as educators to see the problem solving happen when kids have access to a resource that doesn't do all the thinking for them.

We love the Mega Fort Kit as a family kit. It comes with 18 multi-coloured pieces and a tote bag which is plenty for a couple of kids working together. We also stock a range of larger and smaller kits, suitable both to smaller and giant projects. We look forward to stocking Stick-lets for many years to come!

New in 2018, the small 90 piece education set. We have such high demand for Stick-lets from groups such as bush playgroups, schools, homeschooling groups we are excited to keep adding to our education range.

Magformers Best Starter Set Ideas for Toddlers

In our Brisbane shop we are often asked about what Magformers sets to buy to start your collection. As the range has grown over the last couple of years, sometimes the choice can be a little overwhelming, with around 40 different sets to choose from!

Magformers are one of those great toys that you can build up a fantastic collection of over a couple of years, adding different shaped pieces, accessories, moving parts and themes along the way. Here are our top recommendations for starting your collection

Toddlers - You can't go past the 'My First Magformers' line of sets.

What is unique about this series?

  • These sets are all safety rated from 18 months of age and up (unlike the standard sets that are rated for ages 3 and up).
  • Each set includes additional building cards and / or books to teach children all about shapes, colours and connecting pieces together.
  • The colours - they come in a mix of solid bright crayon colours (which is different from the translucent standard pieces

Why do we recommend these sets as a starter set?

These sets are designed for toddlers and adults to work together. Incorporating creative interaction between adult and child. Together they are reading, using their imagination, and learning / teaching new things. The grown up leads the child in the discovery of shapes, colours, patterns, and building.

Like all great open ended toys, children can build on a base knowledge of how and why the pieces work, and then grow their experience as they master the art of connecting the shapes.

How children use these pieces as they grow?

The My First Magformers pieces all are completely compatible with the standard pieces. Down the track you can add in other parts and accessories (such as wheels, people, motors, gears etc) that will all add to your collection. There are not many toddler toys on the market that can grow into a toy that works just as well for a 6 year old, as an 18 month old (just in a different way).

Plus Plus Building Shapes

Plus Plus Building Shapes

We discovered Plus Plus in our store a couple of years ago, and over that time we have seen it added to the construction collections of many families all over Australia.

Would you believe when we first added it to our shop, we didn't sell a single box for months and months. We were convinced this was a simply wonderful, open ended toy for kids, and so we used it a couple of times in our school holiday workshops (in a pixel art class, as well as a mosaic building workshop) and it was such a hit.

From that moment we had quite a Plus Plus rush, as word spread about this fantastic open ended toy.

We find the Midi range is perfect for kids from around 2 to 7 years, and the basic (smaller size ) seems to be popular from about 5 or 6 years and up.

If you are looking for a creative toy to add to your collection, or the perfect present then we highly recommend Plus Plus.
